Mumbai: It was September 2020. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) took action against actress Kangana Ranaut's Mumbai office and demolished parts of it. Kangana, who rushed to Mumbai at the time, had uttered a warning against then Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray, which turned out to be prophetic.

What was Kangana Ranaut's warning for Uddhav Thackeray?

"Today my house has been broken, tomorrow your arrogance will be shattered," Kangana had warned Uddhav Thackeray on that fateful day in 2020.

Now, around six years later, with the defeat of the Thackeray brothers in the 2026 BMC elections, Kangana's words seem to be coming true. A 2020 video of Kangana Ranaut against Uddhav Thackeray is once again going viral on social media.

What did Kangana say then?

Kangana had shared a video on Twitter saying, "Uddhav Thackeray, what do you think? You have taken great revenge on me by demolishing my house with the help of the film mafia,” the Bollywood actor had said.

“Today my house has been broken, tomorrow your arrogance will be shattered. This is the wheel of time. Remember, it doesn't always remain the same, and I think you have done me a great favour. I knew what the Kashmiri Pandits must have gone through; today I have felt it... Jai Hind, Jai Maharashtra," she added.

However, at that time, the Bombay High Court had ordered a stay on the action against Ranaut's office.

What is Thackeray's fate in the BMC elections?

The Mahayuti alliance of the BJP and Eknath Shinde's Shiv Sena has registered a massive majority in the 227-seat BMC (Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation). Uddhav Thackeray's Shiv Sena (UBT) has faced a major setback. While the BJP alliance is projected to win 130 seats, Uddhav's Shiv Sena alliance is expected to be limited to just 71 seats. Uddhav Thackeray's decision to contest the elections with Raj Thackeray also appears to have backfired. A similar trend is visible in the results of the municipal corporation elections across Maharashtra. Here too, the BJP is projected to win a majority. The BJP is poised for a resounding victory in 29 municipal corporations of Maharashtra. For the first time, Mumbai is set to have a BJP mayor.

What about the Thackeray brothers' ‘Marathi Manoos’ card?

In this election, the Thackeray brothers emphasized the Marathi identity. According to Axis My India, they received a 49% vote share among Marathi voters, but Marathi voters constitute only 38% of the total electorate in Mumbai, while North Indians, Gujaratis, and other communities (30-35%) strongly favored the BJP. The Mahayuti alliance successfully consolidated these non-Marathi votes. The Thackeray alliance's focus remained solely on the Marathi vote.

Did Raj Thackeray manage to convince voters?

Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray recently addressed a rally and said, "People from Uttar Pradesh and Bihar should understand that Hindi is not your language. I don't hate the language, but if you try to impose it, I will kick you. They are coming to Maharashtra from all sides and taking away your share. If you lose your land and language, you will be finished."

However, Raj Thackeray's statement united North Indians in favor of the BJP-led Mahayuti alliance.

What was the major mistake by Uddhav Thackeray?

According to media reports, Uddhav Thackeray's decision not to ally with Congress was a major strategic blunder. Raj Thackeray's MNS was already weak. In this situation, Uddhav Thackeray's decision to abandon the Congress and join hands with Raj Thackeray proved to be a big mistake. Furthermore, aligning with the MNS also cost the Shiv Sena the minority vote.

What worked in the favour of Mahayuti alliance?

The BJP-Shinde Shiv Sena alliance performed well at the organizational level. The duo of Devendra Fadnavis and Eknath Shinde reached out to the public on issues such as central government schemes, development projects, and 'one nation, one election'. The BJP garnered non-Marathi votes, while Shinde's Shiv Sena brought the Marathas into the alliance. Due to the lack of a stable political stance on local issues, the MNS failed to play a decisive role in elections like the BMC polls.
